Powered by 157 TOPS: How BRAV-7121 Became the “Super Brain” Behind Material-Handling Robots

From “people-to-goods” to “goods-to-person”, industrial material-handling robots are transforming modern manufacturing by making factory operations more efficient and intelligent.

Behind this transformation is a powerful “super brain”—the BRAV-7121.

Powered by the BRAV-7121 controller solution, a leading publicly listed robotics company in China’s Yangtze River Delta has successfully deployed intelligent material-handling robots that deliver reliable performance in real-world industrial applications.

Industry Challenges: High costs ❗ Limited Data ❗ Deployment difficulties ❗

👷‍♂️ Labor Shortages and Rising Costs

Manufacturers are facing persistent labor shortages, particularly in repetitive and physically demanding tasks such as material handling and sorting, where employee turnover remains high. Meanwhile, rising labor costs are driving the need for automation solutions that improve efficiency while reducing operating expenses.

📉 Limited Real-World Data

The lack of high-quality real-world operational data limits AI model training and optimization. To accelerate algorithm development and continuous model improvement, the industry requires large-scale, diverse, and high-quality data collected from real deployment scenarios.

🏭 Challenges to Large-Scale Deployment

Large-scale robot deployment requires seamless integration with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), PLCs, and safety systems. To operate reliably across different factories and production environments, robots must overcome challenges such as precise positioning, adaptive navigation, and exception handling.

💥How Can These Challenges Be Solved? BRAV-7121 Has the Answer!

Solution: BRAV-7121 – The Powerful Brain Behind Material-Handling Robots

Hardware Foundation: High Performance + Exceptional Expandability

🧩 AI Computing Core

Powered by the NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX, the BRAV-7121 features an 8-core Arm Cortex-A78AE CPU, a 1024-core NVIDIA Ampere GPU with 32 Tensor Cores, 16 GB of onboard memory, and delivers up to 157 TOPS (INT8) of AI computing performance.

👁️ Visual Perception

The ECB-309 GMSL daughter card supports one depth camera and three wide-angle cameras, enabling low-latency, long-distance video transmission with excellent interference resistance.

🦾 Motion Control

The EtherCAT daughter card provides the bandwidth and real-time performance required to control multiple servo drives. Each servo drive can control multiple joints, supporting up to 28 joints in total, while the integrated EtherCAT Master protocol stack enables reliable real-time motion control.

🧭 Obstacle Avoidance & Navigation

Controls LiDAR, IMU, and centimeter-level positioning modules through Gigabit Ethernet, serial ports, and I²C/I/O interfaces, enabling accurate navigation and obstacle avoidance.

🛡️ Safety Sensing

Controls up to eight ultrasonic sensors through serial ports and digital I/O to provide reliable obstacle detection and safety protection.

🚗 Chassis Motion Control

Wheel odometry is managed through the serial interface. The encoder’s A/B phase signals are connected to the hardware counter module, which performs high-speed pulse counting, while the BRAV-7121 periodically reads the counter values to obtain the robot’s motion and positioning information.

🔌 Expansion Interfaces

The BRAV-7121 also integrates two CAN 2.0 interfaces and one RS-485 interface for connecting battery systems, sensors, and other peripheral devices. A built-in M.2 M-Key slot supports NVMe SSD storage, while the M.2 B-Key and Mini PCIe expansion slots support 4G, 5G, Wi-Fi 6, and other wireless communication modules, enabling cloud connectivity and remote OTA (Over-the-Air) updates.

Software Platform: A Complete Ecosystem for End-to-End Deployment

🔥 Supports JetPack 6.2 Super Mode, unlocking up to 157 TOPS of AI computing performance. It also integrates TensorRT, cuDNN, VisionWorks, and the Visual Perception Engine, providing a comprehensive AI software stack for accelerated inference and computer vision applications.

⏱️The PREEMPT-RT kernel provides a critical real-time foundation for complex robotic applications such as motion control and real-time perception. Benchmark testing shows that it reduces latency jitter for critical threads from several milliseconds—or even tens of milliseconds—to within a few hundred microseconds, ensuring deterministic real-time performance.

🤖 Powered by ROS 2 Humble, the platform includes a comprehensive robotics software ecosystem with key frameworks such as Isaac ROS, Nav2, and MoveIt 2. Its modular communication architecture enables efficient and decoupled collaboration between perception, motion control, navigation, and safety subsystems. For example, Nav2 provides autonomous navigation and safe path planning for transporting materials from factory workstations to unmanned AGVs, while MoveIt 2 handles motion planning and control for 7-DOF robotic arms.

🔁 On the motion control side, the platform integrates an EtherCAT Master protocol stack for high-performance real-time control. On the perception side, it supports multiple brands of GMSL depth and wide-angle cameras, while DeepStream builds AI pipelines for multi-camera video processing, enabling efficient analysis of visual data from multiple video streams. The platform also supports customer-developed AI models—including object detection, semantic segmentation, and depth estimation—to accurately identify and classify handled objects.

Through a comprehensive hardware and software solution, the platform establishes a complete end-to-end workflow spanning Scenario → Data → Model → Application, overcoming the challenges of deploying robots in complex environments. Through seamless collaboration with MES, AGVs, and industrial mobile robots (AMRs), it enables an integrated indoor and outdoor autonomous logistics workflow covering warehousing, sorting, material handling, and delivery.

Solution Value

✅ 30% Increase in Operational Efficiency

For applications such as tote handling and material sorting, robots complete each operation 6 seconds faster than manual labor while operating 24/7, significantly improving productivity and freeing workers from repetitive tasks.

✅ Highly Competitive Return on Investment

In material handling and sorting applications with high ROI potential, replacing manual labor delivers significant cost benefits. A leading robotics customer in China has planned an initial production capacity of 1,000 units per year and has already entered production-line commissioning, marking the transition from proof of concept (PoC) to large-scale commercial deployment.

✅ Dual Improvement in Safety and Quality

Robots use AI vision algorithms to identify minute surface defects in goods, ensuring consistent quality control; simultaneously, they free humans from heavy physical labor, reducing the risk of workplace injuries.

✅ Redefining Smart Manufacturing

By establishing a data-driven, self-optimizing closed-loop workflow, the solution continuously improves through real-world deployment. The ultimate vision is to build embodied intelligence with industrial cognition, environmental interaction, and self-learning capabilities, laying the foundation for the next generation of lights-out factories.
